Winter doesn't have to break the bank to be fun! There are plenty of ways for families to make the most of the chilly season without spending a lot of money. From outdoor adventures to cozy indoor activities, here are some great low-cost ideas that will bring joy to your winter days.
Sledding and Snow Play

Free!
Sledding is a classic winter activity that’s fun for all ages. Look for a local hill or park where sledding is allowed, and spend the day racing down the slopes. If you don’t have a sled, you can often improvise with a large plastic container or find a cheap inflatable version at a local store.
Ice Skating at a Local Rink

$5–$10 per person
Many community ice rinks offer affordable public skating sessions. You can often rent skates for a reasonable price, or if your family skates often, it’s worth investing in a pair. Ice skating is a fun way to get active outdoors, and it’s a great bonding experience for families.
Bonus Idea: If you don’t have ice rinks nearby, look for frozen lakes or ponds (always check if it's safe to skate there first).
Winter Hiking

Free!
Winter transforms landscapes into peaceful, frosty wonderlands. Put on your warm clothes, grab your boots, and go for a winter hike. Many national and local parks remain open in the winter months and offer peaceful trails with fewer crowds. Plus, winter hiking provides a great workout, and you’ll get to experience nature in a whole new way.
Bonus Ideas: Look for animal tracks in the snow and try to identify the creatures that made them.
Homemade Snow Cones

Less than $5!
Even if you don’t have a snow day, you can make your own "snow cones" by gathering fresh snow and topping it with homemade syrup or flavored water. It’s a sweet, affordable treat that can feel like a special winter activity.
Winter Wildlife Watching

Free!
Even in the colder months, many animals remain active. Grab a pair of binoculars and go on a winter wildlife-watching adventure. Birds like chickadees, woodpeckers, and hawks can be spotted in many parks or backyards, and if you're lucky, you might spot deer, squirrels, or other creatures. It’s a fun and educational activity for kids and adults alike.
Go on Out there and enjoy WINTER!!!
