Low Barrier and FUN Outdoor New Year Resolution Ideas

New year - new you. The age old tradition of new year resolutions can create good habits, but it can also create stress if you are holding yourself accountable but struggling to stick to it. Instead of creating an extreme lifestyle change through your resolutions, I want to suggest building a template for small but positive changes for your physical and mental health while creating opportunities to explore and try new things.

Get Active Outdoors

One of the most common outdoor resolutions is to get more active. Whether it’s hiking, biking, running, or playing sports, the goal is to increase physical activity while enjoying the natural world.

Start small: Begin with a walk in the park or a short bike ride. Take your watch or your phone to track how long you’re outside and how far you’ve traveled. Create a list of parks nearby that you want to explore, or find a fun outdoor activity you can try nearby like rock climbing, kayaking, trail running, etc. Once you find something you enjoy and that is convenient, it becomes a lot easier to make it part of your routine.

Practice Mindfulness Outdoors

In today’s fast-paced world, mindfulness and meditation have become key elements of mental well-being. Getting outdoors can make it easier to detach yourself from your email, texts, social media, etc and enjoy what’s happening around you. I don’t know about you, but I’m not always the best with total silence, so sometimes I do find myself needing to listen to music or a podcast, but I always find my mind wandering after I’ve been moving for awhile - which means I’m detaching and relaxing! Practicing mindfulness outdoors—whether it's through meditation, yoga, or simple mindful walks—has become a popular resolution.

Camp More

Camping allows you to fully immerse yourself in nature and disconnect from everyday distractions. It also provides the perfect opportunity to bond with friends or family. There are so many ways you can camp; you don’t have to go buy yourself a backpacking kit and completely disconnect from society. As a kid my family would camp in our backyard throughout the summer - it was a fun and easy way to learn to become comfortable outside. Boy scout campgrounds, national parks, and a lot of family-friendly outdoor resorts offer ways to get outside without completely losing the comfort of running water, pre-built firepits, and cellphone reception with your car nearby. So whether you want to start small or go all-out and hike your way into the wild with just your belongings on your back, camping provides a super fun way to get outdoors, detach from your daily routine, and celebrate the moment.

Volunteer for Outdoor Conservation

Whether it’s helping clean up parks, planting trees, or assisting with wildlife protection, getting involved in nature conservation is a meaningful way to spend more time outdoors. You can look for local environmental organizations or nonprofit groups that organize outdoor clean-up events, tree planting initiatives, or wildlife monitoring to meet new people, give back to your community, and enjoy some time outdoors.

So, what are you waiting for? Get outside and make 2025 the year you embrace adventure, nature, and all the benefits the great outdoors has to offer!
